Within the Employment Insurance schemes are new parameters that help employees return to work after being quarantined from COVID-19.

  • Employees are now encouraged to make a claim if they find themselves with reduced hours or unemployed due to the virus.
  • The standard one-week waiting period will be waived
  • Quarantine applications have been prioritized
  • No medical certificate will be needed to qualify.
  • Applications can be made at a later date, allowing the employee to properly look after themselves while they’re still sick.

The Work-Sharing program is where the employee, employer and Service Canada help to avoid potential layoffs through supplementing the losses caused by reduced workloads.

  • The program provides income support to employees eligible for Employment Insurance benefits who work a temporarily reduced work week while the business recovers.
  • Amendments to this program have been made, and the program now applies to the forestry, steel and aluminum sectors.
  • The feds have also doubled the maximum length of agreement period to from 36 to 78 weeks.
  • Also, it normally would have taken 30 days to negotiate these programs, but under the current situation, this time frame has been waived.

Beyond these changes to EI and the Work Sharing Program, Prime Minister Trudeau said on Friday March 27th that Canada will be increasing wage subsidies for small businesses from 10 per cent to 75 per cent.

He also announced a new “Canada Emergency Business Account” that will allow banks to give up to $40,000 in government-backed loans to businesses, with no interest for a year and the chance that $10,000 will be forgiven.
